Well, in 1867 it cost the United States of America $7.2 million. Russia offered to sell Alaska to the US in 1859, but the purchase was delayed due to the Civil War. After the war, Russia made the offer again, and on March 30, Secretary of State William Seward accepted the offer. The Senate approved the purchase on April 9 and President Andrew Johnson signed the purchase treaty on May 28. Alaska was formally transferred to the United States on October 18,1867. Alaska covers 375 million acres. So at $7.2 million for 375 million acres ain't to bad.
For ages cheese makers were puzzled by the holes in Swiss cheese. Now it's believed that the holes are caused by microscopic bits of hay in the cheese. Gas molecules attach to the little bits of hay. The size and number of holes in the cheese are directly related to the amount of microscopic bits of clay. Swiss cheese of earlier times had larger and more abundant holes because there were more hay particles for the gas to attach to. Due to the increased technology, cleanliness has improved so there are fewer holes are they are getting smaller.
The giant Gippsland earthworm (Megascolides australis) is the largest earthworm species on the earth. The average length is 3.3 feet long and they can reach up to 9.8 feet in length. Like most earthworms, they have the ability to expand and contract their bodies.
